Wednesday was a half day for Larry. The plan was to spend the afternoon and evening in Cascais. While Larry was working, Eileen bought the all-day metro and train combo cards. When Larry was done, we took the blue and green lines to Cais de Sodré, and took the 40-minute train ride to Cascais.

We walked to the main plaza and beach, and then meandered along the promenade west.

Lighthouse in the distance

We walked past the Sintra-like Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum and the Casa de Santa Maria (temprorarily closed for renovation) to the Santa Maria Lighthouse. Unfortunately the lighthouse itself was closed on Wednesdays for going up, but we looked through Lighthouse Museum, which was quite interesting.

We walked all the way along the promenade and some paths off the walk to the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth). The Boca do Inferno lies along the Costa da Guia, a stretch of dramatic eroded cliffs 2 km to the northwest of Cascais, and is one of the most striking natural sights on the Lisbon Coast. Because of the time of year, we did not see any big waves crashing, but enjoyed watching the fisherman, some in precarious spots near the water.

We did not take a picture of the “boca” from the promenade, but here is one from the Visit Cascais website.

We then walked back through the town, stopping to admire the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego — a modern art museum containing the works of Paula Rego, an internationally acclaimed artist. The building was designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura, and thus a stop for a photo. We did not go in as it was such a nice day, we just wanted to walk around.

After getting back into the center, we stopped for sangria and bread at the Flamingo Restaurant.
Larry had a work call as a follow-up to his work that week, so we found a nice bench in the shade so he could talk.
After that we just headed back to the Flamingo Restuarant where Eileen had Portuguese style whole fish and Larry had chicken peri peri.
After dinner we took evening train back to Cais de Sodre and then metro back to Epic Sana hotel.
